"I can not change the direction of the wind, but I can adjust my sails to always reach my destination"
- Jimmy Dean
Before we build a plan, we have to choose a destination worthy of the effort.
After I sold my company I checked off a bucket list item for me. I paid to go to the 2019 Courageous Conversations Conference on Necker Island with Sir Richard Branson. I was lucky enough to meet the 2016 Noble Peace Prize winner President Juan Manuel Santos. (And play beach volleyball against him... the punch line is that he won.)
He told a story about a lesson he learned early in his life while he was in the Navy. His ship was leaving the port and a senior officer told him to look back at the ships still moored and said (I paraphrase) "Look at those ships. They are safe in the harbor but they are meant for the sea. But those ships cannot live at sea forever. We must always know our destination port before we leave the safety of the harbor or risk being lost."
The first part of creating a vision for a destination is to understand where you are starting from.
This will result in you having clear goals and a vision of what success looks like for you, your family, and your business.
Complete these steps:
An optional step is to take a Clifton Strength finders assessment if you have not already. I'm not affiliated with them and am not getting any cash from them, but really found the results valuable for myself personally so I could understand how to play from my strengths and hire for my weaknesses.

The hurricane is made up of all the winds and friction that will sink your ship. In this talk, I walk you through how what you believe and how your mindset operates will impact your business.
You'll learn the signs of your mindset putting you in danger as well as a prepper for the systems and processes conversation we will be having later.
My definition of failure is "Being super successful at something you don't care anything about.". Often we find ourselves suffering in our day-to-day lives because we have not taken the time to slow down and reconnect.
Now that you have a firm grasp on some of your major life themes and personal identity statement, you should be able to create a vision of your future that is grounded in where you are now and who you aspire to be.
